Valley of the Temples, Agrigento
Set on a plateau not far from the sea and surrounded by flowering almond trees, the Valley of the Temples, Agrigento is among the best-preserved archaeological sites of classical Greek civilisation and corresponds to the remains of ancient Akragas, the original nucleus of modern Agrigento.
The Valley of the Temples preserves shining examples of perfectly conserved Greek architecture, such as the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of the Dioscuri, and the temples of Olympian Zeus and Juno, among the most significant buildings in the world built in the ancient Doric order. The park also includes sanctuaries, pagan and Christian necropolises, fortifications, agoras and a network of underground aqueducts, with almost 1,300 hectares of land to explore.
